I remember the first time I heard this. I had just graduated from college and was living in a dorm room with my boyfriend. We were playing Scrabble and he won the round. I had no idea he was the guy from the song.
When I heard the song it was like someone had grabbed my heart and held it hostage. I was surprised that it had not killed me (and my boyfriend) at that moment, but I couldn’t resist the urge to sing the old “When I get a chance to be out on my own I’m gonna use this to get what I want.
There are plenty of songs that are good for you but that don’t make you want to sing them. That’s because you like to have your own little world where you don’t need anyone else to sing your songs. I like to sing my own songs. It is the only way to maintain my own privacy when I need it (especially when I am on my own). If I could sing all day I would.
We all need to get our own shit together. We need to love ourselves. But, we dont have to sing about it all the time. And we dont have to show it all the time. But thats the idea. We just need to get it done.
When I was working at a video store I had to do a lot of song requests. I would be at the front cash register and people would come up to me and say they wanted to record a song and I would have to say yes or no. Then they would hand me the microphone. I had to say yes or no to each request I received, and I had to remember to say yes to each request I received.
It’s a little bit like doing a song commercial for a car. It doesn’t have to be your own song, but there will be certain aspects of it that you have to remember to say yes to.
I would be at the front cash register and I would have to ask if my lyrics were okay. I would have to ask if the lyrics were okay for the video to be played on my website. I would have to ask if the video was okay to be used in the song. I would have to ask if the song was okay to be used on my website. And I would have to try and remember to say yes to each request I received.

the problem is that your song is an example of “mind your own shit” marketing. The song itself is written and produced by the folks behind “Why Don’t You Let Me Play My Own Thing?” (a song for the band Coldplay) and is about the way these bands of musicians feel about the way their music is used.
