This week, I had the opportunity of speaking with Joshua Harris, one of the founders and members of the group, The Leadership Institute, on his thoughts on the leadership we are all involved in.
Joshua Harris is a senior member of the Leadership Institute, a group that focuses on corporate leadership and management. The idea for the Leadership Institute came about after Harris’ father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Harris decided to run for president of the Leadership Institute, and the organization started in his father’s memory. Harris has since joined the Leadership Institute board of directors and is a member of the board of directors.
It is interesting to note that Harris and his father were the only two people to go through the Leadership Institute (along with other prominent leaders in the field) to have their memory wiped using an advanced program. This is one of the biggest reasons why most people don’t know how to lead their companies or organizations.
I guess when you say, “You know… we need to get rid of these people”, it kind of sounds like you don’t want them around. However, if you have members of leadership institutes on your board of directors, it’s more likely that you do.
The reason this program was implemented to wipe everyones memories was not to simply get rid of people, its to create a culture of fear. So if you make a decision about who you hire, you tell them what you think of their ideas, and they say, “We do not want to work with this person.” Its like they think you are a complete freak. The only way to have a good leader is to be honest with them and tell them the truth about what you want.

That’s why companies exist. Companies exist to hire and fire people, but companies also exist to build a culture of fear. If you don’t have that fear, you have nothing. Now, that may sound like a terrible thing, but that’s how most people work. In that case, you’re in a good company and the people you work with are probably in a good company.
No, I’m not. Maybe we should just stop being afraid, and just be honest with them. It’s easier to be honest with them when you’re a real person, and they can be more honest when you’re an ordinary person. And that’s the point.
People who work at evil companies have the least amount of humanity in their lives. Many people work at evil companies because they choose to be evil. I would love to see the world where evil people work for evil companies, and not because they choose to be evil. It would be much more fun.
The point is that there is a point at which you have to be honest. It is not always easy to be honest with people who you do not understand.
