I think there is a big difference between business and work, but I would argue that it is a little bit easier to do business when you are doing what you love. You are a different person when you are working. No longer do you have to get up at the beginning of the day and try to get a paycheck. You get to work and do what you love. If you are working for a company, that is a whole different story.
Businesses are really what you make of your business, but working for a company is a whole different beast. As I mentioned above, it is often a lot easier to do work when you have a firm job, however, it is often harder to do work when you are freelancing. I get asked a lot “should I start a business?”, and I always say “make it work” in the hope that at least one of my clients will agree.
If you start your own freelance business, the first thing you will want to do is to find a client that is willing to put their money on the line for you. You don’t want to make the mistake of putting too much of a risk on your business. As a result, I’d recommend that you get a professional, on-request, hourly rate.
As in most things, it can take a while to get a client who is willing to put their money on the line for a freelance work you are doing. As a result, you might also want to pick a client that has a specific skill set that you can make use of. For example, if you are a graphic designer and you are doing some branding for a company that deals with some special items, you might want to work with a graphic designer.
A big part of success is being able to offer what you are truly good at, and finding a client that is willing to put their money on the line for you. As always, it boils down to knowing what you are good at and how to make the most out of that skill set.
The old adage that “nothing is original” is probably true, but sometimes it may be nice to give the client something unique or original. Think about a client like a band that needs some artwork done for some new merchandise they are selling, or a lawyer that needs a logo designed for a new company they have a partnership with. What makes these things unique are usually things that have not been done before.
I often think of our own work. It isn’t always original, but it is often creative. I’m not a big fan of originality, but sometimes it can be nice not to be original.
I don’t know what it is that makes you think of your own work so much, but it seems to be something that I think of a lot. I feel like we do it to fit the bill. We have to be original, but if we are original we are also special. We have to be unique, but we have to bring something to the table.
