“I have never seen a more beautiful, less intelligent, more courageous, or more moral woman than you are.” That quote was spoken by Mrs. Kennedy to her husband John F. Kennedy upon his election. She went on to serve eight years in the Senate of the United States, and became a beloved figure in the United States. She was the first woman to fly overhead over the nation’s capital. She was elected to the U.S.
I was lucky enough to be able to see her speak live, though my memory of the event is a little fuzzy. I do remember hearing her quote a good phrase or two and that she was very wise. It’s hard to get a good handle on her personality, style, and leadership qualities when you get a really good look at her.
I don’t think that Joseph Kennedy II was just “lucky enough to be able to see her speak live” as she did in the clip. She had the advantage of being the only woman at the time, which was a big deal for women in a male dominated profession. So even though she had been the head of the Senate during her first two years in office, she was still relatively inexperienced.
The second, and more important, reason why Joseph Kennedy II was able to see and speak with her was because she was one of the few people in the United States to have an extensive professional platform from which to speak. There was a lot of talk about her background and her politics at the time, so when she was interviewed by the press, the interview was almost exclusively about her career.
Well, her professional background included the fact that she had an MBA from the Harvard Business School and was a practicing lawyer for ten years. She had also served on the board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a group that was dedicated to suicide prevention.
If you think her career accomplishments sound impressive, you’d be right. But as a lawyer, she was a bit of an enigma. She was very public and didn’t always seem to be interested in her clients’ interests, which was odd considering she was a very public person. She had been married to Senator Ted Kennedy for a period of years, but they didn’t have a child together. She had married Senator John F.
Kennedy, a man who had once been called the most powerful man in the world, but at the time of his death, he was on the run from a congressional investigation into his alleged misuse of official funds. It is believed he committed suicide because he was tired of being under investigation.
One of the things I love about this trailer is how the story actually continues: Ted is alive and well and living in a mansion, but there is a lot more going on behind closed door. It was actually the character, Joseph P. Kennedy, II, who was responsible for the assassination of JFK. He was the president’s brother-in-law. He was also a prominent figure in the Kennedy Administration. He was the first person to be tried and convicted on the assassination.
This trailer is so beautifully shot. I had a hard time even being able to see the camera angle when he’s driving past and I was thinking, “Oh shit, I’m not going to be able to see the way the scene is coming in”. But then I realized that he was driving towards an open street, so I could just let my window down while I watched the view of the car through it, and the car was running.
In the trailer we see a young man, wearing a dark suit, who is trying to look more distinguished in a pair of very expensive shoes (what the hell are they?) and is trying to make a very impressive impression to his boss, in a very serious voice. He is a bit nervous and doesn’t know what to do next. The trailer is very well done.
