I’ve known a lot of people who have had this attitude, but I’ve also known lots of people who have developed this skill. It’s not a matter of not being able to do it or not being able to do it well. It’s more like, “Do you really think you’re capable of making up your own mind?” It’s as much a matter of being able to listen to the voice of your own conscience.
Self-awareness is one of the most important skills in life, because it allows us to make sound judgements about ourselves, our beliefs, and our actions. For example, we’re able to ask ourselves whether we’re really giving our time and energy to something that may not be of value. We can think of ourselves as independent thinkers, not slaves to an arbitrary belief or opinion.
