This quote, from philosopher David Hume, is one of my favorite things to read. It is the definition of how our minds function, and it’s also an example of how we can be so caught up in our own mental chatter that people have said or done things we regret.
In the last few years, one of my favorite words has been “self-awareness.” The definition is what makes us human, and the idea of being aware of ourselves is like the definition of our own humanity.
If you’re not aware of how you are feeling when you’re feeling bad, you’re not going to be able to stop and assess how to fix the problem. So, if you’re feeling stressed, angry, sad, or any other emotion that you’re not aware of, you’re not going to be able to take care of yourself. The same goes for people who are unaware of themselves.
I’ve always thought this was true, and I think it applies to a lot of human behavior. If we know how our emotions are affecting us, we have to learn how to regulate them. We can’t just let feelings rule us. When we’re having a bad day, for example, we might take action to fix it, but if we see ourselves as having a problem, we have to learn how to deal with that problem and how to avoid the feeling of being powerless.
I think this concept is called the “emotional self.” If we are aware of our emotions, we can learn to regulate them. We can, for example, be aware of how worried we are about something and take action to prevent it from happening (e.g. get a new job). If we are unaware, we cannot be able to regulate our emotions, and can get into trouble when we feel powerless.
Harvard opm is a “problem-solving” game that is meant to help you recognize and deal with your emotions. I think this game is a great game for helping you come up with strategies to deal with our most significant problems (e.g. finding a job).

I like this game because it is about finding a solution to your problems, not being a martyr.
